On October 17, 2024, QBN proudly participated in the Forum für die Quantenkommunikation in Deutschland hosted by the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Berlin. This pivotal event, showcased Germany’s advancements in quantum communication technologies and their critical role in IT security and technological sovereignty.
The event, initiated by Germany’s three flagship quantum communication projects—QuNET, QR.X, and SQuaD—highlighted their collaborative efforts to build a robust quantum ecosystem. A key moment of the day was the official presentation of the Impulspapier zur quantengesicherten Zukunft in Deutschland to Staatssekretär Dr. Roland Philippi. This policy paper, developed jointly by QuNET, QR.X, and SQuaD, outlines a strategic vision for advancing quantum-secure communications and supporting Germany’s technological sovereignty.
We were proud to contribute QBN’s industry perspective during the discussions and engage with stakeholders from research, industry, and policy. Also with us QBN members like KEEQuant and Pixel Photonics. Staatssekretär Dr. Roland Philippi emphasized the need for a strong innovation ecosystem to bridge the gap between research and market deployment—a goal that aligns closely with QBN’s mission.
A highlight of the forum was the presentation of the SQuaD project, co-initiated by QBN and PTB, as a key initiative shaping Germany’s quantum communication ecosystem. SQuaD is driving the development of scalable quantum networks, fostering technology transfer, and strengthening international collaboration to ensure Germany remains at the forefront of quantum innovation.
The event underscored the importance of transitioning from localized testbeds to national and international quantum networks while emphasizing collaboration within the EU to secure Europe’s technological leadership. These are the challenges QBN addresses by connecting industry leaders, research pioneers, and policymakers to transform breakthrough technologies into practical applications.
QBN is committed to enabling strategic partnerships, fostering commercialization, and driving quantum innovation to advance Germany’s leadership in secure communication and support Europe’s technological sovereignty.
