Healthcare and Space Applications

We are excited to present a summary of the latest QBN Meeting on Quantum Sensing & Imaging, which took place online on February 13, 2024. This gathering provided exclusive insights into groundbreaking advancements and facilitated discussions on future directions in the field.

The meeting started with an enlightening presentation by Stefan Bogdanovic, Senior Research Scientist and Quantum Sensing Lead at SandboxAQ. He talked about one of the most impactful applications of quantum sensing: Magnetic Cardiac Imaging using quantum sensors. Considering that cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death for individuals aged 30 and above, Stefan emphasized SandboxAQ’s application-first approach, selecting the appropriate sensor based on the specific application. By integrating quantum technology and AI, significant improvements in heart disease diagnosis are achievable. He also highlighted how AI can classify maps and derive metrics, enhancing our understanding of a patient’s risk of heart disease.

Following this, Lisa Wörner, Institute Director at the German Aerospace Institute for Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensing, discussed quantum technologies in space. She introduced relevant papers and shared insights into applications both from and in space, including navigation by GNSS, communication, earth observation, exploration, and space weather surveillance. She also familiarized attendees with the Bose-Einstein Condensate and Cold Atom Laboratory (BECCAL) used for navigation purposes.

During a collaborative working group session, participants engaged in dynamic discussions to outline strategic directions, goals, and upcoming activities for the future of the WG Quantum Sensing & Imaging .

Looking back on the event, we’re excited about the teamwork and wealth of shared knowledge. The discussions not only highlighted current challenges and opportunities in Quantum Sensing & Imaging but also set the stage for future collaborations and research directions. Stay tuned for more updates and insights.
