The European Commission published a roadmap aiming at the EU member states with a set of recommendations for a coordinated and synchronised transition to PQC. The roadmap takes into account the current assessment of the status of quantum computer development by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the recent joint statement by partners from 21 European states on Post-Quantum Cryptography.
Key recommendations and timeline:
- Stay informed of the quantum threat to cryptography.
- Exchange knowledge and experience at national, European and international level.
- Make the quantum threat part of the risk management of all relevant entities
- Establish mature cryptographic asset management to facilitate the transition to PQC
- Initiate a national PQC transition strategy by the end of 2026
- High-risk use cases should be transitioned to PQC asap, no later than the end of 2030
- Transition should be completed by 2035.
