European Commission published Roadmap for Coordinated Post-Quantum Cryptography Implementation in EU Member States – Industry should be aware

Digital infrastructures from supercomputing centres to distributed sensors in smart factories as well as and data are a backbone of our modern society. The threat to many cryptographic algorithms from quantum computers affects stored and transmitted data as well as the operation of systems that is currently not quantum-safe. Attacks on authentications and such as “harvest/store now, decrypt later” threaten current and future cybersecurity.

A timely, comprehensive and coordinated transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is mandatory to ensure cybersecurity and consequently national and economic security.

The European Commission published a roadmap aiming at the EU member states with a set of recommendations for a coordinated and synchronised transition to PQC. The roadmap takes into account the current assessment of the status of quantum computer development by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the recent joint statement by partners from 21 European states on Post-Quantum Cryptography.

Key recommendations and timeline:

  1. Stay informed of the quantum threat to cryptography.
  2. Exchange knowledge and experience at national, European and international level.
  3. Make the quantum threat part of the risk management of all relevant entities
  4. Establish mature cryptographic asset management to facilitate the transition to PQC
  5. Initiate a national PQC transition strategy by the end of 2026
  6. High-risk use cases should be transitioned to PQC asap, no later than the end of 2030
  7. Transition should be completed by 2035.

The QBN experts advises industry and authorities with critical infrastructure and sensitive data, from finance and energy, automotive and manufacturing to logistics, defence and space, to take the recommendations seriously. Experience shows that the transition, especially the integration, takes time. So, do not wait, start today!

QBN supports end-user enterprises and governments along the steps recommended by the European Commission.
