Working Group Quantum Technologies for Defence & Security

As global geopolitical tensions rise, the need for deeptech innovation and adoption to maintain strategic superiority has never been more pressing. Quantum technologies, including quantum communication and cryptography, quantum sensing and quantum computing, play a critical role in enhancing defence due to their potential to revolutionize secure communications, encryption, simulation, optimization, machine learning, and sensors and imaging devices. These unparalleled advancements can provide national militaries and defence alliances such as NATO with a significant strategic and operational edge.

Vision

Quantum Readiness of the Defence & Security Sector – for strategic superiority and its own benefit – and ultimately for the wider economy and society when quantum becomes even more commercially available.

Mission

To accelerate Quantum Innovation and Adoption in Defence and Security by developing realistic roadmaps with clear product – capability requirement fit, promoting collaboration and SME participation, connecting strategic initiatives with operational stakeholders and closing the gap between high-level policy and practical implementation leveraging existing efforts.

Together with the Defence Industry, the Quantum Community, Defence Ministries and other government organisations and alliances the Working Group Quantum Technologies for Defence & Security will define real defence problems and explore pathways to adoption ensuring deployability and scalability – including co-development, testing, piloting, and integration into existing systems.
